Federal Interagency Collaboration to Reduce Food Loss and Waste

In May 2024, The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) re-signed a formal agreement (PDF, 412 KB) to renew their Federal Interagency Collaboration to Reduce Food Loss and Waste (FIFLAW) and welcomed the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) into the collaboration. With the renewal of the agreement, the agencies reaffirm their shared commitment to reduce food loss and waste. The addition of USAID enables the collaboration to reach a broad range of international stakeholders. The agencies will continue to leverage government resources to reduce food loss and waste, producing educational materials, conducting outreach, making community investments, and engaging in public private partnerships. The agencies will continue to develop tools, provide technical assistance, participate in FLW events, coordinate voluntary programs, and engage in policy discussions.

The first formal agreement among the USDA, EPA, and FDA was signed in October 2018. The three agencies renewed the agreement (PDF, 724 KB) in December 2020, reaffirming their commitment to improve coordination and communication efforts to better educate Americans on the impacts and importance of reducing food loss and waste.
